Spring Walking Challenge

Start the season off on the right foot by taking a walk today! Then commit to walking everyday until summer!

It’s a great way to wake up hibernating muscles and get them in shape for fun, warm weather activities like gardening, swimming, badminton, stand up paddle boarding (yes, you could do that–and it’s a blast!). If you live in a four-season area, you know that spring is the season of the most changes. A daily walk allows you to experience all of them! And that’s just the beginning. You’ll also start to notice changes in you, too!

You’ll sleep better, have loads of energy, get more done, feel happier, and be less likely to snap when you’re kids or significant other pisses you off. You might also start to notice that your clothes are getting a little looser, you’re not panting after racing up a flight of stairs, and those grocery bags are a bit easier to tote around. Join me on this spring adventure and see where walking can take you!

Here’s where I went today…

My backyard on the first day of Spring 2014
My backyard on the first day of Spring 2014

That’s my backyard as I headed out for my first spring walk today. Snow on the first day of spring is a rare sight in eastern PA (I live about an hour north of Philadelphia). Despite a breezy, 45-degrees (I wore gloves and a headband to cover my ears.), it still felt different than my walks a few days ago. It felt like spring. The air smelled fresher. The sun shined more brightly, and the cloudless sky was a beautiful pale shade of blue. The birds were definitely more active, flying from tree to tree and yard to yard, probably looking for food and material to build new nests. With the trees bare, I could seem remnants of their nests from last year (including a basketball-size hornets nest in one tree). Their chirps and tweets were background music for my 25-minute walk.

I’m looking forward to sharing the change of seasons with you. I hope you’ll walk with me and share your experiences, too.

Happy Walking!

Michele

Hi Michele,
You couldn’t ask for better weather to encourage walking outside, so I accept your challenge. Since yesterday was technically the first day of spring, I did today’s 15 minutes and 15 for yesterday! Off to a good start! But I am going to need encouragement to persevere, so I am glad I am not alone here.

Michele, I’m taking your Spring Walking Challenge today, May 6. O.K., I know it’s been spring for a while, but you’d never know it from the weather, so that’s my flimsy excuse. I did 200-meter racewalk repeats in my local park in Brooklyn, N.Y., for 56 minutes. Yippee!

Great to hear and congrats!!! It doesn’t matter when you start the Challenge just that you start! I’ve had an easier time (well, most days) doing the walking. It’s writing about it that’s been tougher…I need to get my latest posts up on the site! You’ve inspired me!
